Crystal Gauges
GRC QPG
QPG 877 Quartz Gauge
Operating Principle
The sensor (QPG 877 Quartz Gauge) is the result of a concentrated effort to provide the energy industry with the latest technology available for accurate measurement of downhole pressures.
The transducer employs the use of a rugged crystalline quartz sensor that responds to the stress created by pressure. The response is in the form of a change in resonant frequency created by the applied pressure. These frequencies are then converted to real pressure by using the calibration coefficients.
The surface computer does this operation. The pressure dependance of the sensor is slightly non-linear but is easily corrected during calibration using a third-order polynomial function. In addition, crystalline quartz is considered to be perfectly elastic which contributes to the excellent repeatability that is characteristic of this technology.
Two additional quartz sensors are employed, one to measure temperature and the second serves as a stable reference signal. The temperature measurement is used for dynamic temperature compensation of the pressure crystal while the reference signal is used as a stable timing base for frequency counting.
Oscillator circuitry employs surface mount technology, which enhances the small overall size and the ruggedness of the transducer.
The memory storage media is non-volatile which means that the internal memory
does not require a constant voltage supply.
Data can be downloaded to a computer within minutes of gauge retrevial and a
full printout, including linear plot can be produced within 10 minutes.
Gauage data can be viewed within minutes of retreival QPG-877 Quartz Pressure

GRC SURFACE READ OUT (S.R.O) INTERFACE
Used for surface recording, this is an interface between the gauge and computer which supplies power to the down hole instrument through a single conductor electric line.
It receives the pressure/temperature signals from the gauge, multiplies the signals through a phase-lock loop amplifier and counts the signals before transferring them to a computer for processing.
The GSC-503 is widely used with the EPG-520 & QPG-820 for real-time recording of pressures and temperatures, which can be displayed on the host computer.
The GSC-503 has four recording channels. It can record output from the EPG-520
down well and the WHG-730 at the wellhead. It also records output from an
ETG-514 temperature gauge.
The EPG-720, which is the gauge portion of the EMS-700, can be configured for
electric line output to be recorded by the GSC-503. Similarly, the QPG-877,
which is the gauge portion of the QMS-700F, can be configured (as QPG-820) for
electric line output to be recorded by the GSC-503.
